Embarking on a big trip around Australia with your family is an extraordinary adventure that promises countless cherished memories and awe-inspiring experiences. From the majestic coastal stretches to the rugged outback, Australia’s diverse landscapes offer a world of exploration for you and your kids. Here are our eight tips for planning your trip route to make it the trip of a lifetime!

1. Set Your Family’s Priorities and Interests

Start by discussing your family’s interests and priorities for the trip. Do you want to soak up the coastal beauty or immerse yourselves in the enchanting Outback? Are there any specific landmarks or attractions you’d like to visit? Consider everyone’s input to create a well-rounded itinerary that caters to each family member’s interests. Our family loves the coast but we are wanting to get the true off-grid camping experience with free camping in the outback, so we have opted for a 1/2 lap this year, leaving South Australia and heading north to Darwin. We will then track over to the northwest coast of Western Australia. We want cost-effective camping and we want to move at a pace that works for our young kids.

2. Do Your Research

Utilise guidebooks, online resources, and travel forums to gather information on potential routes, must-see destinations, family-friendly activities, and camping options. Look for hidden gems, national parks, cultural experiences, and attractions that will captivate your family’s curiosity. Facebook groups and YouTube have been a great starting point for us. We also love using Google Maps in satellite mode because you can find some unique and unpopular spots for stops along the way.

3. Determine the Duration

Consider the duration of your journey based on your family’s availability and the sights you wish to explore. Will you be taking a few months or a year for your Big Lap? Remember to allocate ample time for rest days, detours, and unexpected discoveries. Be realistic about the distances you can comfortably cover each day while keeping your family’s sanity in mind.

4. Plan for the Season Variations

Australia’s climate varies significantly across regions, so it’s important to plan your route accordingly. Consider the seasons and weather conditions in each area you’ll be visiting. Take note of potential extreme temperatures, rainy seasons, and cyclone-prone areas. We have had some crazy weather over the last 12 months and with a high amount of rain across Australia, it is a reminder that you need to keep on top of the weather predictions. Adjust your itinerary to ensure comfortable and safe travel during your chosen time of the year.

5. Create a Flexible Itinerary

While it’s essential to have a rough itinerary in place, embrace the freedom of the road and allow for spontaneity. Leave room for detours and unexpected adventures with new friends you have made on the road. Be open to recommendations from fellow travellers or locals – this is where you can learn about some of the best experiences!

6. Safety and Family-Friendly Stops

Identify family-friendly stops, playgrounds, and attractions suitable for children. I’m always on the hunt for a playground near our next fuel stop. You can find some of the best free experiences in some of the quirkiest of towns. Research medical facilities, pharmacies, and emergency services along your route. As we have a baby who is starting solids, we make sure we don’t introduce any new foods unless we are near a medical facility.

7. Balance Travel and Rest

Long days on the road can be tiring, so strike a balance between travel and rest days. Allow time for relaxation, exploration, and rejuvenation. We find that travelling more than two hours a day can really wear thin on everyone. If you do need to travel for more than two hours incorporate breaks at scenic spots, beachside towns, and destinations offering family-oriented activities. This will ensure that everyone has a chance to unwind and enjoy the journey to the fullest.

8. Stay Connected with the Caravanning Community

We love the caravanning community. Especially after the Covid pandemic, more and more young families are working and living on the road. Join online caravanning communities and forums to connect with other families who have embarked on similar journeys. Seek advice, share experiences, and gather insights from those who have travelled the same routes. These communities can provide valuable tips, recommendations, and a sense of camaraderie as you navigate the big trip together. Platforms such as Instagram and Facebook are awesome for connecting with like-minded travellers. We met friends online before we even took off on our trip and have made plans to meet up on our travels.

Route planning for a Big Lap around Australia with your family is an exciting process. Remember, the planning should be just as fun as the journey so take your time and enjoy it!
