Dig into our hacks and tricks for travelling Australia.

Camping is a fantastic way to explore the great outdoors and experience the natural beauty of Australia. It is also one of the more affordable ways to travel as a family, but it can be an expensive activity; especially if you’re not tracking a budget. There are many money-saving tips and tricks that you can use to make your trip around Australia more affordable. Here we share a few of our best money-saving tips when camping around Australia.

1. Choose low-cost or free campsites

One of the most significant expenses when camping is the campsite fee. If you plan to stay in popular caravan parks in hot tourist locations, you can expect to pay premium prices. However, many free or low-cost campsites around Australia offer basic facilities such as toilets, showers, and fire pits. Do some research before your trip and choose campsites that are affordable and suitable for your needs. Consider the location, accessibility, and facilities of the campsites, as well as any restrictions or regulations that may apply. Local council-run campsites (free camping) are usually the most cost-effective camping options. We love council-run campsites because they usually offer sites in some of the most scenic places in Australia.

2. Find loyalty or discount programs

Loyalty programs with accommodation providers are a great way to save a buck. Check out G’Day Parks or become a Big4 member for special discounts or promotions. Government and local councils may also offer discounts on passes, such as the All Parks Pass for National Parks if you are travelling to Western Australia. You can also find seasonal offers and other discount coupons for accommodation or experiences at the local information centre.

3. Cook your own meals

Eating out can be expensive, so consider cooking your own meals when camping. Bring a portable gas stove or BBQ, and prepare simple but tasty meals using local produce and ingredients. Plan your meals in advance and make a shopping list to avoid impulse buying or wasting food. Also, bring reusable containers and utensils to reduce waste and save money on disposable items. Travelling with a group of friends or family can be a great way to save money when camping. You can split the food as well as share the workload of setting up camp and cooking meals. Plan to do the majority of your shopping at big change supermarkets. You will find that remote supermarkets and local grocers have to charge premium prices due to their remote location.

4. Reduce your fuel consumption

If you can manage to reduce your weight across your car and caravan, you will find your fuel economy to be much better. Only fill your water tanks if you plan to head off the grid and always purchase good quality fuel such as a BP. We also use shopping dockets through Flybuys. Another big saver is to stay in places for longer and travel less in the car to reduce your weekly fuel spend. If you take your trip at a slower pace, find a free camp near to free activities; make the most of the stay by relaxing there for a bit longer.

Camping around Australia can be an affordable and enjoyable activity if you’re willing to put some effort into saving money. By choosing the right low-cost campsites, using discounts where possible, cooking your own meals and reducing the impact on fuel consumption you can significantly reduce the cost of your trip!
