One of the best ways to explore this amazing land is by camping, and there are many different options for families to choose from. Whether you prefer the simplicity of a swag or the comfort of a camper trailer or caravan, there is a camping set-up that will suit your preferences. So what are your options?
Swags
Swags are a traditional Australian camping option that is popular with those who prefer simplicity and a more rugged camping experience. A swag is essentially a canvas bedroll that you roll out on the ground, providing shelter and protection from the elements. They are easy to set up and pack down, making them a popular choice for families who are on the move. Swags are also relatively inexpensive, making them a great option for those on a budget. Swag camping is great if you have older kids who are happy to have that bit more independence and can join in on the pack-up and pack-down.
Tents
Tents are another popular camping option for families travelling around Australia. They come in a range of sizes and styles, from small two-person tents to larger family-sized tents that can sleep up to ten people. Tents provide more protection from the elements and more privacy than swags. Tent camping works really well for groups of families who wish to spend extended time together at one location. If you are wanting to move every few days with a young family, we would not recommend tent camping. Pack up and pack down of tents are very weather dependant and the moving day would just be full of unhappy campers! For us, travelling in a tent was not an option with two kids and wanting to move regularly. The arguments would not be worth the experience!
Camper Trailers
Camper trailers are a popular choice for families who want a bit more comfort and convenience while camping. They are essentially a small trailer that can be towed behind a vehicle and come in a range of sizes and styles. Camper trailers provide a comfortable bed and a kitchenette, and some even have a shower and toilet. They offer more protection from the elements than a tent or swag and are a great option for families who want a bit of luxury while still experiencing the outdoors.
As we travelled to more remote locations we found a camper trailer suited our off-road adventures better. Our Austrack Camper Trailer was a forward-fold and was elevated off the ground. Set up and pack down would take 30 mins and allowed us to move easily every few days. We even tested its limits in 60 kms winds and with extra tie-downs, it did ok! Our set-up included a toilet, hot water system, shower, kitchen and fully enclosed annex. The Austrack Camper Trailer suited getting into tight free camps that caravans would not attempt. Many secluded national park sites are better suited to camper trailers or swags/tents only.
Vans/Motorhomes
We started our travels off as a young family in an old 1987 Ford Econovan. It was a modest vehicle and due to the lack of space, it kept us travelling light. It wasn’t the most reliable vehicle, but it sure did have character!
Vans and motorhomes are a popular choice for families who want to travel around Australia in comfort and style. Vans and motorhomes are essentially mobile homes on wheels, offering all the comforts of home while on the road. They come in a range of sizes and styles, from small two-person vans to larger motorhomes that can sleep up to six people. Vans and motorhomes provide a comfortable bed, a fully-equipped kitchen, a bathroom with a shower and toilet, and even air conditioning. They are ideal for families who want to travel long distances and want to have all the comforts of home with them.
Caravans
Caravans are a popular option for families who want to travel around Australia in comfort and style. They are essentially a mobile home on wheels, offering all the comforts of home while on the road. Caravans come in a range of sizes and styles, from small two-person caravans to larger family-sized models that can sleep up to six people. They provide a comfortable bed, a fully-equipped kitchen, a bathroom with a shower and toilet, and even air conditioning. Caravans are a great option for families who want to travel long distances and want to have all the comforts of home with them.
As we now have a family of four, we have moved to a caravan for our longer stints of travel. Each type of ‘home on wheels’ has its pros and cons, but for this season of our lives and with our two young children, we have opted for a caravan.
Each option has its own benefits and drawbacks, so it’s important to choose a camping set up that suits your needs and budget. No matter which option you choose, camping in Australia is an incredible experience that will provide memories to last a lifetime.
